Following, we will introduce how to use Orca Slicer.

1. Configure Device and Filament Information

Configure the 3D printer and filament properly. This part of the information will affect the entire 3D slicing process.
We can select related information manually, refer to the image.

Or download the configuration file from here directly and import it to your slicer. The configuration file includes a 3D printer profile and matched settings with various types of filaments.

2. Import Your Model File

Click “ FileImport – choose format that matches your file.”

3. Resize

The size of the imported 3D model is designed by the designer. Sometimes it doesn’t match the size of your 3D printer build plate, or you want to resize it to match your needs, then follow the operation to adjust the size.

Click “ Scale” to set the size you want.

If you want to change one of X, Y or Z, you can uncheck “uniform scale” to achieve it.

4. Lay on Face

If you need to adjust the contact surface between the model and the build plate or check the condition of the contact surface, you can do it like this:

“Click to select the model- Lay on Face – Click on the surface you want it to contact the build plate”.

And you can rotate the cube in the lower-left corner or the build plate by left-clicking and holding the mouse button to get a better view of the model.

By observing the contact surface in this way, we will find that the contact surfaces of some models are very small, to prevent warping and improve insufficient adhesion, a brim is usually recommended. Generally, Auto is set by default. If you are still worried about poor adhesion, there are 3 options that can be set; choose one of them. We have also provided a detailed explanation of brim. Please refer to What Is a Brim in 3D Printing and When to Use It.

5. Configure Settings

More detailed settings here: Open “ Advanced “.

We can set Quality, Strength, Speed, Support… in this section.

For beginners, some settings, we recommend starting from the default. Of course, trying a few custom settings is also supported, such as “Support”. The setting of the support is an exception. We recommend that beginners use the “tree” support and set “on build plate only” rather than the default, as the two settings offer higher print success rates, easier support removal, and fewer chances of damaging the model. 6. Slice the Model

When all settings are done, click “Slice plate”.

7. Export G-code File

Click “ Export G-code file” to export Orca Slicer process settings and store to your SD card.

8. Send to 3D Printer

Transfer the G-code to your 3D printer via SD card, and start printing.

Bambu Studio

Bambu Studio is very friendly to beginners as 3D printing software, which automatically generate slice parameters, and there is rarely a need for manual parameter adjustment. Then, how to use Bambu Studio?

The operation of slicing in Bambu Studio is almost the same as that in Orca Slicer.

1. Basic Information

Add your 3D printer and filament information. This is the foundation of 3D slicing.

2. Import 3D Print File

The import step is the same as Orca Slicer.

3. Size

Click: “Scale” to resize.
The same as Orca Slicer, if one of XYZ needed to be changed only, then uncheck “uniform scale“.

4. “Lay on Face” to Set Contact Surface

The function of “Lay on Face” is: Select a certain surface of the model and make this surface automatically “stick” onto the printing platform.

Putting the largest and smoothest surface stick to the build plate is recommended, which reduces the risk of warping and enhances adhesion of the first layer.

5. Advanced Settings

The same as Orca Slicer, Quality, Strength, Speed, Support and Others can be set in the advanced mode.

6. Slicing

Finish all settings, then click “Slice Plate” to complete the slicing.

7. Export G-code

Bambu Studio doesn’t support printing online directly for Geeetech 3D printers, so we click “Export G-code file” here.

8. Send G-code to 3D Printer

Store the G-code to SD card, then send it to your 3D printer.

Bind M1S Mini 3D Printer to the 3D Print APP

Slicing is finished, another important operation is binding M1S to our 3D print APP—Geeetech. It can be printed remotely after binding. Below is a beginner-friendly, step-by-step guide.

1. Download

The 3D print APP named “Geeetech“.

Geeetech supports IOS and Android systems. It has been listed on Apple’s APP Store and Google Play, and it can also be downloaded from our official website. Click here.

2. Register

Email, verification code and password are required for registration.

Some users were troubled in verification code receiving. We’d like to offer two possible ways to resolve it.

  • Check spam box

Maybe the email system identified the verification code as a spam email.

  • Use private and NO special characters email address to register

Some companies’ email addresses do not receive verification codes.
Gmail, Hotmail… are preferred.

 Special characters include punctuation and other marks…( for example: jackie.Chan@example.com “.” is not allowed)

3. Bind and Connect

What Is Slicing?

Whenever you have a 3D design that you want to print, you will need to prepare the digital format for your printer. Instead of just having the complete “block” of your model, it is necessary to slice the model into smaller segments, the individual horizontal layers that the printer will actually produce.

This formatting is called slicing, and is therefore an important part of any FDM 3D printing process, as well as many other types of 3D printers. Think of each layer as representing a cross-section of the model that the printer builds sequentially, and that the slicing is responsible for actually keeping track of the layers and their position.

In simple terms, the slicing is “translate” the 3D model into a series of instruction files that the printer can understand and execute layer by layer.

Why Is Slicing Important in 3D Printing?

Since you will need to convert your 3D design into simple instructions that your 3D printer can understand, slicing can be considered one of the most important parts of the entire process. You may have a beautiful 3D model you created yourself, or picked off the internet, but if it has no slicing data you can not print it.

  3. Wall thickness: The thickness of the outer shell.
  4. Support structures: Automatically generated, removable scaffolds that prevent overhangs from collapsing during printing.
  5. Print temperature and speed.

The last of the most common parameters is the print temperature and speed. This is generally decided by the material used, so if you use TPU filament, ABS or some others 3D printer filament, you might change these settings in particular.

Step 3: Slice the Model

One you have set all your parameters as you want, you can then click “Slice model” in order to begin the automated process. Depending on the size of your model, how complex the shape is, and the various parameter values, this can take a few minutes on the shorter end or up to 20 minutes on slower devices with a large and complex model.

This is because it performs the “virtual slicing” on the model, along the Z-axis and generates precise printing paths for each layer that your 3D printer will then follow once it becomes time to actually print the model.

Step 4: Generate G-code

Most software applications will then save all these slices into a new file, known as G-code, which then not only stores all your virtual slice paths, but also saves information that the printer will use to know what temperature the hotbed should be, how much extrusion is needed and so on.

Step 5: Send to Printer

The last step before printing, is getting your G-code uploaded to your 3D printer. On your model and preference, you will usually be able to select doing this through a standard SD card, a direct USB, Bluetooth or through your WiFi or LAN networking. Once your 3D printer has received the G-code, you can then begin printing.

As we mentioned above, there are different types of 3D printing software that you can use to slice your model. In general, they all convert 3D models into G-code instructions for the printer, so it becomes a matter of preference which type of software you end up choosing.

Simplify3D, Ultimaker Cura, PrusaSlicer

Among the most popular used slicers, you would see names like Simplify3D, Ultimaker Cura, and PrusaSlicer. They are either branded applications that come packaged with your specific 3D printer, or massively used third-party applications created by enthusiasts. Many of these programs have free and paid options, and they typically support a wide range of printers and materials.

What Is A 3D Pen?

Before we look at specific designs and possibilities, let us first briefly go over the principle of how a 3D printing pen actually works. The device is an electronic unit that is shaped similarly to a mechanical pen, typically a bit larger and heavier, though.

On the inside of the 3D pen is a heating element which melts the printer filament, such as PLA, PCL or ABS material to then extrude it through the tip and allow the user to “draw” their designs. The filament quickly cools down and solidifies, making it possible to quickly create several layers on top of each other.

Many people use lineart on paper or printed designs to help them follow a pattern, but you can also “freehand” draw with the 3D pen in order to let your imagination dictate what object you create with your designs. This allows for total freedom, and is thus great for children and adults alike.

What 3D Printing Materials Can Be Used by 3D Pens?

In general, the most common types of filament for 3D pens are PLA, PCL and ABS filaments, but it will all depend on the specific model and type of 3D pen you have. For instance, the popular Geeetech TG-21 supports 3 different types of filaments: PLA, PCL and ABS. And for the dimensions, it works with 1.75mm filament.

For beginners who are unsure what type of material to go for, it is often recommended to start with PLA filament as it uses a relatively low temperature, is environmentally friendly, does not have any bad smell and is also easy to use in the 3D pen.

PCL filament has an even lower melting point (about 60°C), making it a decently safe and great choice for children. The material is also quite soft, which makes it possible to create curves and other unique design features.

ABS filament is another filament that can be used in 3D pens, typically used by more advanced users. This is due to the strong odor it releases, and the high printing temperatures. Therefore, you will need good ventilation when printing with this material, although it does provide the properties of ABS which makes it great for certain objects.

How to Do 3D Printing with a 3D Pen?

The basic principles of most 3D Pens are quite simple to learn and understand. The first step is generally turning on/plugging in the 3D pen depending on the model. Next up, you will need to insert the 3D printer pen filament of your choice, and then set a temperature for heating accordingly. After a short wait, you are ready to start “drawing”.

How to Use a 3D Pen?

Since the different 3D pen models have slightly different instructions, we will use the Geeetech TG-21 3D pen as our example for this guide. This model is easy to use, and supports different filaments for you to experiment with.

  1. In order to start, you should first turn on the power and connect the 3D pen to your power adapter.
  2. Next, you need to select which material you wish to draw with for the session. The LCD screen has different options so choose the one that matches.
  3. Once you have selected your filament, click on “Load Filament” in order to begin preheating the material.
  4. The LED light will be red while preheating, and once it turns green you can then insert your chosen filament through the loading hole, then click “Load Filament” once more in order to complete the process.
  5. Now you can select your specific print settings, such as temperature and speed in order to get the best results. This is up to you and can require a bit of experimentation to get perfect.
  6. Once you have been using the 3D pen for a while, you will likely run out of filament or wish to stop. In both cases you need to click the “Unload Filament” button for at least 3 seconds, this will begin an automatic procedure that releases the remaining filament.

How to Conceive and Design 3D Pen Templates?

You do not have to be a professional modeller or artist in order to use the 3D printing filaments with your 3D pen to great effect. All you need to do is draw. If you don’t have any inspiration at this moment, there are many free templates available online that are worth discovering. Below, we are sharing some tips and samples for design.

1. Achieve a 3D Object by Stacking Two-Dimensional Shapes

For example, draw a circle, stack the circle with many layers, and finally, a hollow cylinder is formed. You can use this to design a pen holder or other objects with depth.

2. Utilize the Existing Objects as a Tool

Was ist ein 3D Stift?

Das weiche Filament erkaltet direkt und ermöglicht so einen relativ präzisen 3D Druck. Man könnte das Filament der 3D Stifte mit der Tinte eines normalen Stifts vergleichen. Jedoch mit dem Special-Effekt, dass man nicht nur auf Papier, sondern auch in den Raum malen kann.

Wie verwendet man einen 3D-Stift?

Ein 3D Stift ist wesentlich einfacher zu benutzen als ein 3D Drucker. Man benötigt zum Beispiel keine Software und somit auch keine Computer-Kenntnis.

Man kann mit einem 3D Stift Starterset in wenigen Minuten beginnen zu drucken. Grundsätzlich kann man verschiedene 3D Druck Filamente verwenden. Beliebt sind PLA Filament, ABS Filament und PCL Filament.

Diese Schritte solltest du befolgen:

  1. Drücke den Anschaltknopf
  2. Wähle auf dem Screen das Filament aus, das du verwendest (zum Beipsiel das PLA 3D Filament)
  3. Drücke den Knopf “Lade Filament” um den 3D Stift vorzuheizen (rotes LED wird angezeigt)
  4. Sobald das Licht grün ist, drückst du erneut „Lade Filament“, sodass das Filament in die Nozzle transportiert wird.
  5. Nun kannst du Drucken! Du kannst die Temperatur und die Geschwindigkeit während des Druckens anpassen.
  6. Stelle sicher, dass du alles Filament verwendest und keine Reste im 3D Stift zurückbleiben. Hierzu verwendest du den „Entlade Filament“-Knopf (Halte den Knopf 3 Sekunden gedrückt)

For the Geeetech M1 we have focused on designing a fast and portable 3D printer that can deliver quality prints whether you are a beginner or seasoned pro. This is made possible due to the large-capacity nozzle that is combined with a direct drive extruder, a 50W hot-end heating rod, a heated bed and a large-size model cooling fan, resulting in a printing speed of up to 250mm/s.

We have also been designing the custom firmware for our small 3D printer, which comes with 2 advanced algorithms out of the box.
With the input shaping firmware, the M1 printer minimizes vibrations and ringing artifacts in the 3D prints, allowing you to print at much higher speeds without reducing the quality.

Using the pressure advance functionality, you will see the results in form of a more consistent extrusion, as our firmware prevents the blobs that typically form at corners or during acceleration of the print head. This gives you sharper corners and less stringing effects. This makes our M1 the best 3D printer for small prints at the moment!

Direct Drive Extruder

One of the main innovations on the Geeetech M1 is the dual-drive gear Direct Drive Extruder with a gear ratio of up to 5:1, which allows for fast 3D printing, and provides greater torque, greater extrusion force, faster response speed and a higher printing accuracy compared to BOWDEN extruders that are common on the market currently. Due to this innovation, it also becomes easier to print with soft TPU materials and flexible filament.

Fully Automatic 16-point Leveling

Another reason why we believe this is a good beginner 3D printer for everyone getting started with printing, is that the Geeetech M1 integrates a high-precision pressure sensor on the hot end, that is designed to measure the flatness of the hot bed throughout the nozzle. This provides a fully automatic hotbed leveling, which in turn greatly reduces the difficulty for beginners in setting up and calibrating the machine.

High Torque Stepper Motors ( 1.8°stepper motors )

For stepper motors,  the Geeetech M1 uses 42*42*35mm NEMA 17 motors on both the X, Y and Z-axis, which results in more power and precision. The direct drive extruder makes use of a 36*19.5mm Nema 14-round stepper motor, which effectively reduces the weight of the print head, while meeting the performance requirements we have set forth in our design documents.

Efficient Heat Dissipation

One issue that fast 3D printing is known for is a buildup of heat. However, with our innovative design the Geeetech M1 has effectively solved the problem with overheating on printers of this size, due to the 50×50×15mm large-size blower that improves printing speed and model quality while keeping everything cooled down to the appropriate temperatures. We have even added a cooling fan to the motherboard for the stepper motor drive in order to further ensure proper heat dissipation and reliability during high-speed printing.

Filament Runout Sensor

Continuing with the theme of being beginner friendly, the Geeetech M1 has an advanced detection sensor for filament breaks and running out. This way the printer will stop if the 3D printer filament breaks or runs out at any point during the printing process. You can also resume the printing once you have fixed the filament break or resupply filament, allowing you to keep your print without having to start all over.
And the filament runout sensor with tension release function which aims to avoid filament breaks due to friction.

Automatic Nozzle Cleaner

Based on feedback and results from our previous 3D printers, we have designed the Geeetech M1 with an automatic cleaning nozzle device, that handles nozzle maintenance which is one of the most common issues. This way you do not have to manually clean after every print.
And more, the silicone brush that can withstand temperatures up to 300°C for a short time, and

the brush has a good performance of removing residue and exudate from the nozzle and has little wear. I guess the most important point that customers want to know is whether the automatic nozzle cleaner will interfere with the movement of the print head. The answer is NO. The automatic nozzle cleaner will not affect the work of the print head.

More User-Friendly Designs

We have also designed the Geeetech M1 to be a great 3D printer for kids, as the user-friendly interface includes a 2.4″ LCD color screen with ample space for displaying all the necessary information. The PEI print plate makes it easy to remove the model after printing, and the added 3 high-brightness LED lights provide plenty of light to make it easy to work on the machine or the print at any time of day.

The first two images show the soft prints made with TPU filament, which is a flexible material that still provides high fidelity and accurate details, while also being incredibly malleable.

The final image shows a few objects made with PLA filament, which is one of the most common types of filament used in the market. The prints have lovely smooth surfaces without any rough parts, and since the material itself has a low cost, it is the perfect filament to combine with the M1 for some of the best budget 3D printer results available on the market at the moment.

Wenn das Filament während des Druckvorgangs reißt, unterbricht Geeetech M1 den Druckvorgang automatisch. So können weitere Komplikationen vorgebeugt werden! Nachdem das Filament wieder richtig positioniert wurde, kann der Druckvorgang fortgeführt werden.

Der Filament-Runout-Sensor erkennt, wenn Filament leer ist, sodass auch hier der Druckvorgang pausiert wird und nach Einsetzen von neuem Filament weitergeführt werden kann.

Automatischer Düsenreiniger

Um die Nivellierung und Druckgenauigkeit zu verbessern, ist Geeetech M1 mit einer automatischen Düsenreinigungsvorrichtung auf der Druckplattform ausgestattet.

Die Silicon Bürste, die hier verwendet wird, kann kurzfristig hohen Temperaturen bis zu 300°C standhalten und reinigt Rückstände und Exsudate sehr präzise. Außerdem ist der Verschleiß sehr gering. Vorteil des automatischen Düsenreinigers ist, dass er den Druckkopf und dessen Arbeit nicht behindert.

What Is Formnext?

Formnext 2024 was held in Frankfurt, Germany, and offered us unique insights into the world of 3D printing. More than 30.000 guests and visitors perused many different stalls and booths displaying their products or techniques, allowing for discussion and learning during the 3-day long expo for all things 3D printing related.

This year we saw that they were focusing on stability and expanding previously established patterns and 3D printing service solutions to increase the efficiency and improve the output quality as much as possible. But of course, there were also many new items and products on display as well such as FDM printers and more.

Some Upgrades of Desktop 3D Printers

We also saw some interesting upgrades in the desktop 3D printer scene, where a couple of manufacturers really stood out to us with their latest innovative inventions.

Bigger and Faster Multicolor 3D Printers

In the space of multicolor printing, we saw an advanced desktop printer using the CoreXY systems, which can achieve great speeds, while also providing up to four different types of filament all joined in the same central hub. For now, the size would still be classified as a desktop printer, which is good news in terms of price once it has finished the development stage.

Active Chamber Temperature Control

We also saw somewhat of a surprise in the form of an enclosed CoreXY printer that comes with active chamber control as the big selling point. While the model was not fully ready for production yet, it allowed for quite a large overall print size of up to 250 x 220 x 270 mm. And the quality of the prints we saw looked really promising so we are eagerly awaiting more news of the actual market launch.

Sustainability of 3D Printing Materials

Another key part of the Formnext 2024 exhibition was highlighting the sustainability compared to alternative methods for printing. Here we saw different 3D printing materials made of different types of sustainable 3D printer filament that makes the printing process extremely eco-friendly.

We also witnessed an interesting invention that used a new type of extrusion system designed to work with recycled filament to cut down on the overall waste of the 3D printer process.

This design has made it possible to reuse old prints and discarded strings of filament, by processing the filament and material that would otherwise be wasted and producing very fine results. We are excited to see how this technology will develop in the future, and whether it will be something every 3D printer will come equipped with once the principles and practical application have been perfected.

Large-Format Printers

One interesting machine showcased was a large 3D printer with a 6-axis robotic arm of 2.8 meters, but not only that, the raised platform bed has another 2-axis, making it possible to create some truly stunning and smooth 3D prints with ease. And the dimensions of the printer allow for a scale that most hobby printers can only dream of.

Another big 3D printer we saw up close was one that takes vat photopolymerization and stereolithography to a new level. Typically these types of printers are reserved for smaller prints, but this model provided us with an example that has 3 lasers in an overlapping arrangement making it possible to 3D print somewhat narrow but very long pieces with precision and speed.

There were quite a few other large-format printers on display of equal interest, leading us to conclude many of the manufacturing companies of these 3D printers are aiming to obtain market shares for large-scale production with a focus on speed, automation and efficient production yields.

3D-Printing Human Tissue Models

We also witnessed a somewhat unexpected type of 3D printing material that gave us a unique experience in the form of a medical type of printing material called a bioink, that can 3D print human tissue models.

We already knew of this invention due to previous innovations regarding stem cell printing, and now the technology has advanced further with additive manufacturing that can produce hundreds of tissues in a single day. There have already been successful results with printing brain and spinal cord tissues, and even skin, leading us excited for where this technology can end up in the near future combined with advanced 3D models.
